"A Boy of Great Promise"
In 1993, Owen was sentenced to life in prison in the U.K. at the age of 32. He was released in late 2013 at the age of 51. After serving 19 years in prison Owen was deported back to his home country of Australia and begin to reintegrate into a society from which he had long been absent.
Owen was released as part of a government scheme designed to reduce the expense and crowding of foreign national prisoners in the U.K..
This series of images is the result of a multi-year project that followed Owen beginning shortly after his release and arrival in Australia. Through documentation this project explores the residual affect of incarceration and institutionalization.
The series title 'A Boy of Great Promise' is taken from the teacher's comments on Owen's 3rd grade report card (final image).
